HC Deb 24 May 1974 vol 874 c321W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement about the postponed North Antrim by-election.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The Chief Electoral Officer decided, because the present circumstances in Northern Ireland made it impossible to keep to the necessary timetable, to exercise his powers under Section 57(4) of the Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1962, as amended, to postpone polling day until Thursday 20th June 1974. As a consequence the last day for the receipt of postal voting applications will be Thursday 6th June 1974. This development has been publicised in the newspapers.
