HC Deb 24 May 1974 vol 874 cc306-7W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what special machinery now exists to counter illegal immigration; and what success has resulted from its use.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Both the Immigration Service and the police have established special intelligence units which work in close collaboration with police forces throughout the country; there is close co-operation between the police and other services; the Immigration Service has links with its counterparts at continental seaports and airports; and there are links between police forces on both sides of the Channel.

As a result, information about people, ships and aircraft suspected of being concerned with illegal immigration is now available to the police and the Immigration Service throughout the country, and their effectiveness in countering illegal immigration has consequently been enhanced.

It is not possible to express in a quantitative form the success of measures taken to counter illegal entry but 42 illegal entrants have been apprehended on arrival so far this year.
