HC Deb 23 May 1974 vol 874 cc217-8W
Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will give details of the cell count level of mastitis in milk in the United Kingdom in each of the last three years; what he regards as the cause of the increase; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moyle

The mean bulk milk cell count per milliliter of all herds in England and Wales in the last three years was as follows:

1971 568,000
1972 542,000
1973 570,000

The differences over the three years are not considered to be statistically significant. In large-scale field trials involving 2,000 herds where the control routine advocated in the national mastitis awareness campaign has been applied there has been a steady decrease in the cell count over the past three years.
