asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what saving he estimates as a result of the removal of the lime subsidy in Scotland; and what effect he estimates this will have on agricultural efficiency.

The saving in Scotland would amount to about £1.3 million per annum. The Government are considering representations from the National Farmers' Unions that the decisions by the previous administration to terminate the subsidy should be reversed.
