HC Deb 23 May 1974 vol 874 c273W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prisoners serving life sentences have been allowed parole, stating what percentage were allowed parole within (a) the first five years of their sentence, (b) the first eight years of their sentence, and (c) the first 10 years of their sentence.

Mr. William Ross

Since the Parole Board was brought into the arrangements for the release on licence of life-sentence prisoners on 1st April 1968, 28 persons serving life sentences, or detained during Her Majesty's pleasure, have been released on licence.

None was released within the first five years of the sentence; two within the first eight years; and 15 had served eight years or more and less than 10. The remaining 11 have served 10 years or more.
