HC Deb 23 May 1974 vol 874 c268W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has for encouraging an increase in the number of teachers for deaf children; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. William Ross

The average pupil-teacher ratio in the special schools for the deaf is satisfactory but there are shortages in particular schools and there is a need for more peripatetic teachers. A course of training for teachers of the deaf was established in Moray House College of Education three years ago. This course has been well subscribed and will provide an increasing number of teachers with the required specialist qualification.
