HC Deb 23 May 1974 vol 874 cc214-5W
32. Mr. Watt

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the figure for self-sufficiency in beef from British farms last year; and what steps he proposes to take to regulate the market in those weeks in the autumn of this year when beef will be in a temporary state of over-supply.

Mr. Buchan

Provisional statistics show that home-fed production in the United Kingdom last year accounted for about 84 per cent. of beef supplies for consumption in the United Kingdom. It would not be appropriate to speculate about a hypothetical future situation which will depend on many uncertain factors. We shall, however, continue to maintain a close watch on developments with a view to taking such steps as may be necessary.
