§ 44. Mr. Wallasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what evidence he has about the level of terrorist activity inside Rhodesia.
§ Miss Joan LestorI have seen reports in the Press about the security situation in Rhodesia which seem largely to be based on statements by the Rhodesian regime. I have no independent evidence to corroborate these.
§ Mr. Loveridgeasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the estimated effects sanctions have had on United Kingdom trade with Rhodesia 166W since their introduction; and, from the representations the Government have had from United Kingdom exporters and importers, if he can also make an estimate of the possible growth pattern of trade which would follow any settlement leading to normal trading relations.
§ Miss Joan LestorWith the exception of the very small licensed trade in permitted items there has been no trade between the United Kingdom and Rhodesia since the imposition of sanctions. In 1965 United Kingdom imports from Rhodesia were valued at £29.2 million and United Kingdom exports to Rhodesia at £31.5 million. The amount by which our trade might have grown or diminished had sanctions not been in force can only be a matter for speculation and I am unable to estimate what the pattern of the growth of trade might be following a settlement.
