HC Deb 22 May 1974 vol 874 c194W
Sir D. Walker-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will give particulars of the assessment of manpower requirements for medical school places and indicate the criteria by reference to which they are compiled.

Mrs. Castle

No precise estimates of manpower requirements have been adopted, but the factors considered relevant include the ratio of doctors to population, the development of the National Health Service, losses of British trained doctors by retirement from active medical work and other causes, and the related net effect of immigration and emigration.
