HC Deb 21 May 1974 vol 874 cc158-9W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many gallons of water per year are transmitted from waterworks in Wales of English undertakings, for use outside Wales; and if he will list the waterworks concerned.

Mr. John Morris

The latest available figures are for the year ended 31st December 1973. In that year the total quantity of water transmitted from Wales by the Mid-Cheshire and Wirral Water Board and the cities of Liverpool and Birmingham was about 51,000 million gallons. The waterworks concerned were the Alwen, Vyrnwy and Elan Valley reservoir systems and the Mid-Cheshire Water Board's River Dee abstraction works.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many gallons of water per year are pumped out of the Rivers Dee, Wye and Severn, respectively, within the borders of Wales; and, of these quantities, how much, respectively, is for use within Wales and how much for use outside Wales.

Mr. John Morris

While no precise figures are available, it is estimated that total quantities of 10,100, 29,600 and 18,600 million gallons per year are abstracted from the rivers Dee, Wye and Severn respectively in Wales for the purposes of public water supply. Of these quantities 5,700, 1,600 and 600 million gallons respectively are used within Wales. Substantial amounts of water are abstracted from these rivers outside the borders of Wales.
