HC Deb 21 May 1974 vol 874 cc117-8W
Miss Boothroyd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will publish the school building projects in the Sandwell metropolitan area already approved and those under consideration for 1974–75 and subsequent years.

Mr. Armstrong

Five major school building projects have been approved to start in the building year 1973–74, namely:

Rowley Regis Boys' County Secondary school, Warley.

Christ Church of England (Aided) Primary school, Warley.

Blakeley Special school, Warley.

Stuart Bathurst Roman Catholic (Aided) High school, West Bromwich.

Menzies High School, West Bromwich.

The allocation of resources for major school projects to start during 1974–75 has yet to be made, but under the terms of Circular 15/73 only major school building projects to meet basic needs for additional places and for special schools will be eligible for approval. There are two such projects in Sandwell. namely:

Dartmouth County High school.

Shireland County Secondary school.

A third project at the Montague Road County Primary School is only partly justified on the ground of basic need. I cannot yet say whether this project will be able to proceed. On the other hand, the authority has been informed that it may, exceptionally, proceed with the replacement of the Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School which was destroyed by fire.

Arrangements for the 1975–76 building year are still being considered.

The allocation to individual projects of resources made available for minor works is a matter for local education authorities.
