HC Deb 21 May 1974 vol 874 cc128-9W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is aware of the continuing concern at the use of British roads by heavy lorries from Europe; what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government with regard to limiting weights and routes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mulley

All continental lorries entering this country must comply with United Kingdom regulations on maximum width, length, and axle and gross weight and the enforcement effort is being increased. I will continue to resist strenuously the EEC proposals for higher weights. I have announced my intention of issuing soon a consultation document on lorry routes, which would apply to continental as well as to British lorries.
