§ Mr. Ian Lloydasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what evidence has been made available to him on the use of naval vessels or military aircraft for internal policy purposes by the South African Government since the end of the Second World War; and whether such evidence has been used in his recent and current reviews of his Department's policy towards the supply of defence equipment to South Africa.
30W
§ Mr. HattersleyI am not aware of naval vessels being used for internal policy purposes. Military aircraft have been used within South Africa and Namibia for transporting troops and police and also for flood and famine relief. These considerations are of course borne in mind in formulating policy, although we do not accept that the arms embargo should cover only equipment which could be used for internal repression.
