HC Deb 20 May 1974 vol 874 c19W
Mr. Corrie

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether any meat imported from Germany has originally come from a country outside the EEC suffering an outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Mr. Moyle

The veterinary conditions attaching to licences to import meat from the Federal Republic of Germany require the meat to have originated in that country.

Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what reports he has received about the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in France and Belgium; and what steps he is taking to prevent the disease from entering Great Britain from the infected areas.

Mr. Peart

We have received regular reports from the directors of the veterinary services in both France and Belgium indicating numbers and locations of outbreaks. No farm livestock are being imported from either country; meat imports have been prohibited from the whole of Belgium and from the infected departments of France.

Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what control he is exercising over vehicles entering the United Kingdom from areas in France and Belgium covered by the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Mr. Peart

There are at present no statutory controls, but we have issued a code of practice to road haulers who carry livestock urging them to ensure that their lorries are cleaned and disinfected before returning from the Continent.
