asked Her Majesty's Government:

The cost per week of keeping an inmate in—

  1. (a) an ordinary prison;
  2. (b) a maximum security prison;
  3. (c) Borstal;
  4. (d) an open prison;
  5. (e) a woman's prison;
and whether the weekly cost varies substantially between one prison and another within each group.

In England and Wales in the financial year 1972–73 (the latest year for which information is available) the average weekly cost of keeping an inmate in the several types of establishment was as follows:

(a) ordinary prisons
(i) local prisons £31.11
(ii) Category C training prisons £28.77
(b) Category A/B maximum security prisons £57.99
(c) Borstals and young prisoners centres £41.35
(d) Open prisons £27.67
(e) Women's establishments £46.51

Records of the cost of individual establishments (except Holloway) are not maintained.
