HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc558-9W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what policy he has for the full implementation of recommendations of the report on the youth service—the Albemarle Report—Command Paper No. 9291 1960.

Mr. Prentice

The principal recommendations of the Albemarle Report were accepted by the Government of the day in 1960 and the development of the youth service in the ensuing decade followed the general pattern proposed in the report. Recent years have seen considerable diversification of the service.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied with the operation of the youth service in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prentice

The provision by local education authorities and voluntary organisations reflects local needs and is, therefore, diverse in nature. I welcome the progress which has been made in developing a growing range of services, and am considering what further help or guidance may be needed.

Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science on what date he will announce the amount of money to be allocated to the youth service capital expenditure programme for 1974–75.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

My right hon. Friend hopes to announce the allocations to local education authorities very shortly.
