HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc250-1W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the tax yield in each of the past 10 years from the farming industry in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Dell

The yields of taxes accounted for and paid by farmers direct to the Exchequer, to the latest date for which full figures are available, were as follows:

Direct taxes (accruals) Vehicle excise duty
£ million £ million
1963–64 36.0 2.0
1964–65 38.1 2.0
1965–66 40.0 3.8
1966–67 43.3 3.4
1967–68 48.7 6.6
1968–69 55.1 4.0
1969–70 58.1 3.8
1970–71 53.7 3.8
1971–72 57.0 3.8
1972–73 N.A. 3.9

Notes:

  1. 1. The figures for direct taxes include income tax on self-employed farmers, and income tax and profits tax or corporation tax on companies. They do not include income tax on distributions made by agricultural companies.
  2. 2. The figures for vehicle excise duty represent the yield from farmers' tractors and farmers' goods vehicles, but not the yield from other general vehicles—e.g. landrovers—kept by farmers. The statistics do not show these separately

Separate figures are not available for the yield of taxes accounted for and paid in the first instance by other industries, some of which may eventually be borne by the farming industry.
