HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 c295W
Mr. Emery

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many soldiers serving in Great Britain and living in married quarters now claim and obtain supplementary social security benefits.

Mr. William Rodgers

Soldiers are not eligible for supplementary benefit since this is not payable to those in full-time employment. Soldiers may claim family income supplement if their income is below the prescribed amount for the size of their family. It is not known how many claim but it is likely to be few. About 1,300 soldiers serving in Great Britain are receiving rent rebate.
