HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc325-6W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in his consultations with the Building Societies Association, he will request building societies not to restrict the advances they make to women on grounds of sex.

Mr. Dell

I have been asked to reply.

The Building Societies Association has for many years consistently advised its members that a woman applicant for a loan should be treated in exactly the same way as a male applicant, provided that she is in regular employment and earning a sufficient income. So far as I am aware this advice is being followed by societies, but if my hon. Friend has evidence to the contrary I will study it.
