HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc570-2W
Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many males, females, boys and girls, respectively, signed the register as wholly unemployed at each of the employment exchanges in the Merseyside area in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and up to the latest convenient date for which his Department has details; and what steps he is taking, in co-operation with other Government Departments, to reduce unemployment in this area.

Mr. John Fraser

Following the reorganisation of the employment services separate figures for adults and young people will now only be available for January and July each year when detailed age analyses are compiled. The numbers unemployed are counted on a selected day each month and the most recent figures are for 8th April 1974. The following table shows information for April of each year requested. We are looking carefully at the needs of Merseyside and other areas with unacceptably high rates of unemployment with a view to considering whether any further measures are necessary.
