asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated cost in working man hours lost of mental illness to the nation in the years 1972 and 1973 and to the latest date in 1974.

The information available relates to the number of days of certificated incapacity reported in connection with claims under the National Insurance Acts. The latest available figures are for the period 7th June 1971 to 4th June 1972. In this period 29.9 million days of incapacity were attributed to mental disorders; 18 million of these days related to incapacity throughout the period.
