Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary ot State for Social Services (1) what is the average length of time a patient waits for a private bed in the Birmingham Regional Hospital Board;

(2) what is the average length of time a patient waits for a National Health Service bed in the Birmingham Regional Hospital Board.

Dr. Owen

Waiting times vary according to specialty; urgent cases are admitted without delay. The latest available information on the average time waited by National Health Service patients admitted from the waiting list is 15.9 weeks (Hospital Activity Analysis for 1972). Comparable information is not available for private patients.

In the year ended 31st December 1972 the occupancy of private beds by paying patients in Birmingham Regional Hospital Board hospitals was 43 per cent.
