HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 c238W
31. Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why the calf subsidy was increased in Great Britain as opposed to a headage payment on fat cattle sold as in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Buchan

The increase in calf subsidy will encourage the raising of calves for beef production. For Northern Ireland the system of headage payments is more appropriate as a way of increasing returns while avoiding distortions of trade between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
