§ 31. Mr. Peter Millsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why the calf subsidy was increased in Great Britain as opposed to a headage payment on fat cattle sold as in Northern Ireland.
§ Mr. BuchanThe increase in calf subsidy will encourage the raising of calves for beef production. For Northern Ireland the system of headage payments is more appropriate as a way of increasing returns while avoiding distortions of trade between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
