HC Deb 02 May 1974 vol 872 cc508-9W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated number of taxpayers to whom the highest rate of income tax on unearned income will be applied and the estimated additional revenue raised in a full year by charging a highest rate of 98p in the pound instead of 93p in the pound.

Mr. Joel Barnett

About 12,000 persons, counting married couples as one, are estimated to be liable to the highest rate of 98 per cent. on some part of their income. The additional yield from a rate of 98 per cent. instead of 93 per cent. is estimated at £5 million in a full year.
