HC Deb 02 May 1974 vol 872 cc504-5W
32. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what progress has been made in his study of the Page Report on National Savings; and when he expects to implement its recommendations.

Mr. Dell

We are making good progress in our study of the Page Report, including discussions with the leaders of the national savings movement and the trustee savings banks. We shall announce our decisions as soon as possible.

37. Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider issuing a new series of index-linked national savings certificates at, for example, a 5 per cent. rate of interest with adjustments to the principal or capital sum to take account of changes in the value of money.

Mr. Dell

The Page Committee on National Savings recommended in its report the issue of an index-linked bond for the small saver, and we are studying this recommendation closely.
