HC Deb 01 May 1974 vol 872 c481W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement regarding his policy towards the charging of fees in schools maintained by local education authorities.

Mr. Prentice

The position is governed by Section 61 of the Education Act 1944, which provides that no fees shall be charged in respect of admission to or education at a maintained school. Local education authorities may charge fees for boarding, except in cases where suitable education cannot be provided otherwise than by boarding, and subject to arrangements for remission where necessary to avoid hardship.
