HC Deb 29 March 1974 vol 871 cc220-1W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the reasons for prolonging museum admission charges for one week after his announcement on 22nd March that decisions to terminate them had been agreed with all parties concerned, bearing in mind their effect upon numbers of visitors during that week.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

It would not have been practicable to deal earlier with the problem of redundant staff and 29th March was the earliest date which avoided accounting difficulties due to the consequential changes in the liability of the institutions for VAT. The agreement announced after consultation was to terminate charges after 29th March.
