HC Deb 26 March 1974 vol 871 c100W
Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how his domestic rate support statement will affect the rate demand of the St. Helens district ratepayers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Oakes

Under my right hon. Friend's proposals the domestic rate relief in St. Helens will be reduced from 13–5p, proposed by the previous Government, to 13p in the pound. It will be for the local authority to determine its rate.

Mr. Rippon

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what will be the total reduction in grant to Northumberland as a whole as a result of the decision to replace the variable domestic element by a flat rate of 13p; and what the loss of grant will be to the Tyneside district in particular.

Mr. Crosland

The estimated reduction in grant to Northumberland as a whole as a result of the decision to replace the variable domestic element by a flat rate of 13p is some £341,000. The corresponding reduction for the Tynedale district is £170,000.
