HL Deb 26 March 1974 vol 350 cc579-80WA
LORD SUDELEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

From which countries the leaf tobacco is drawn in the manufacture of Virginia-type tobaccos listed in the table issued by the Department of Health and Social Security, giving tar and nicotine yields of cigarettes.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRY (LORD BESWICK)

It is not possible to say from which countries tobacco used for particular brands of cigarettes is imported. Virginia type flue-cured tobacco, which is mainly used in the manufacture of cigarettes, is bought from a variety of suppliers, of which the following were the more important in order of volume in 1973:

Country of Origin Quantity Th. lb. Percentage of total Per cent.
1. U.S.A 103,177 38.7
2. India 46,074 17.3
3. Canada 32,924 12.3
4. Brazil 13,386 5.0
5. Malawi 12,364 4.6
6. South Africa 10,535 3.9
7. South Korea 9,316 3.5
8. Tanzania 9,061 3.4
9. Uganda 2,061 0.8
Total all countries 266,068 100.0

House adjourned at sixteen minutes past six o'clock.
