HC Deb 21 March 1974 vol 870 c137W
Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will investigate and give advice on the relationship between the use of sewage sludge and salmonella in the light of recent veterinary findings on this matter.

Mr. Moyle

The possibility of introducing salmonella on to farms in sewage sludge used as a fertiliser has been investigated by the Ministry. The normal processes and operating methods at sewage works reduce the risk to a low level but the danger increases if animals graze on land treated with fresh sewage sludge. The Ministry has always been willing to advise on any problem of this kind.
