HC Deb 21 March 1974 vol 870 cc139-40W
Mr. Winterton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will make a statement about wart disease and the restrictions imposed by his Department upon the planting of certain types of potato by private gardeners and allotment holders.

Mr. Buchan

Wart disease has been the subject of statutory control in this country for some 70 years, and the latest measure is the Wart Disease of Potatoes (Great Britain) Order 1973. One of its provisions is that as from 1st July 1974 only potatoes of varieties immune to wart disease may be planted in gardens and allotments. The order thus extends the previous Scottish controls to first earlies, and applies that system to England and Wales.
