HC Deb 20 March 1974 vol 870 cc97-8W
39. Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Government of Tanzania concerning the arrest of John Miles, a British citizen travelling in Tanzania and held by the authorities there since 9th January.

Miss Joan Lestor

Representations about the detention of Mr. Miles were made by the High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam when it first heard that he had been detained. These representations have been repeated on numerous occasions, and on 13th March the High Commissioner was informed that a decision on whether Mr. Miles should be charged would be taken very soon.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs on what charges Mr. John Miles, late of the Kenya Police, is detained in Tanzania; what representations have been made on his behalf; and what replies have been received.

Miss Joan Lestor

Mr. Miles is being detained under the provisions of the Tanzanian Preventive Detention Act. He has not yet been charged. As soon as the High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam heard of his arrest, it made representations to establish the reasons for his detention and has continued to do so. The High Commissioner was told on 13th March that a decision on whether or not to charge Mr. Miles would be taken very soon.
