Mr. Rost

asked the Secretary of State for Industry (1) what tonnage of steel scrap has been consumed by the British Steel Corporation in each of the financial years 1969–70, 1970–71, 1971–72 and 1972–73 and what is the estimate for 1973–74; and what is the estimated tonnage of scrap stocks held by the British Steel Corporation at the end of each of these periods;

(2) by what tonnage scrap stock held by the British Steel Corporation has declined in 1973–74.

The tonnages of iron and steel scrap consumed by the British Steel Corporation and the end-period stock levels are not published on a financial year basis. Calendar year data are given in the "Annual Statistics for the Corporation", copies of which are held in the Library of the House.
