asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will now make a statement about the application of the proposed Newport District Council to control the library service at present operated by the Newport County Borough Council.

The council's representations against the decision of the previous Government are being carefully considered. I am consulting my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales. A decision will be notified to the council shortly.
