HL Deb 20 March 1974 vol 350 cc364-5WA
LORD GARDINER

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether a final decision has been taken with regard to altering the constitution of the Circuits as a result of the changes in local government boundaries effected by the Local Government Act 1972.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD ELWYN-JONES)

I have decided, with effect from April 1, 1974, to confirm the alterations to the constitution of the Circuits, and the arrangements in certain areas for cases to be committed across the new Circuit boundaries, which were notified as a provisional decision by my predecessor in a Written Answer on January 17, 1974. I have been concerned to ensure that a minimum of inconvenience is caused to members of the public and others who have to travel to the courts, and I have therefore decided that cases from certain areas of the new counties of Cheshire and Oxfordshire will normally be committed to convenient court centres across the new Circuit boundaries. I will certainly be prepared to consider similar arrangements in other areas in the light of experience.
