HC Deb 19 March 1974 vol 870 cc85-6W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will take urgent steps to rectify errors and omissions in the current electoral lists in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Orme

The Chief Electoral Officer, as Registration Officer, is constrained by the provisions of the Representation of the People Act as to the action he can take with regard to correcting a published Register of Electors. Briefly, any alteration can only be made if an entry in the electors' lists was omitted from the register; or if a decision on a claim or objections has not been given effect to; or if the age on which a person attains voting age has been inadvertently omitted. Within these limitations the Chief Electoral Officer will take any necessary action.
