HC Deb 19 March 1974 vol 870 cc77-8W
Miss Boothroyd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total cost per place allocated by his Department to pupils attending direct grant schools in England and Wales for 1972–73, or in the latest available period.

Mr. Armstrong

An annual capitation grant of £79 is at present payable by the Department in respect of each pupil aged 11–19, together with a further £84 in respect of each pupil in the sixth form; on average these grants amount to about £100 a pupil. The total grant paid during the financial year 1973–74 will be about £10 million. In addition the Department expects to pay about £1.9 million towards the cost of tuition fees for day pupils whose parents cannot afford the full fee; averaged over all the pupils this amounts to just under £2 a pupil.
