HC Deb 18 March 1974 vol 870 c43W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what programme he has in mind for diminishing interest rates for the house purchaser; to what extent the 11 per cent. currently being paid on mortgages could be reduced by adopting his proposals; and in what period of time.

Mr. Dell

The Government are considering urgently how best to deal with the difficulties now affecting mortgages, in consultation with the Building Societies Association.

Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will cancel the current directive to major banks, which causes them to pay a lower rate of interest on normal-size savings deposited with them than on large deposits.

Mr. Dell

I have noted the hon. Member's concern.
