HC Deb 26 June 1974 vol 875 c472W
Mr. Harry Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will make a statement on the effect of rail freight charges on domestic solid fuel prices.

Mr. Eric Varley

In order to avoid higher prices to merchants, and therefore consumers, arrangements are being made in respect of solid domestic fuel for British Rail to rebate until November the higher freight rates that would otherwise apply from 30th June. I shall be Introducing a Supplementary Estimate for about£1.5 million to reimburse British Rail for the losses involved. Any expenses before the Supplementary Estimate is approved will be met from the Contingencies Fund.
