asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will improve the grant aid for training physiotherapists in view of its low rate compared with grants payable to other branches of the paramedical professions within the National Health Service.

Physiotherapy students, like several other classes of student trained within the National Health Service, are eligible for training grants assessed by my Department and following closely the Awards (First Degree etc. Courses) Regulations 1971, as amended, which are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science. Following my right hon. Friend's announcement in reply to a Question from my hon. Friend the Member for Fife, Central (Mr. Hamilton) on 14th May—[Vol. 873 c. 1085]—new grant arrangements, including substantial increases in the rates of grant, will come into effect on 1st September 1974.
