463WResearch in this country and abroad indicates that aircraft account for less than 1 per cent. of total atmospheric pollution and that even in the vicinity of a large airport such as Heathrow aircraft give rise to less pollution than an average urban development. I have not so far received evidence that jet exhaust causes pollution of the kind in question but if the hon. Member has any evidence to the contrary it will be investigated.
