Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, with regard to grants paid by medical and science research councils to PhD students, if he will obtain and publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the amounts paid to single and married women students and to single and married men students, respectively, and the variations payable during each year of studies in each case.

The basic annual rates of postgraduate maintenance award currently payable to qualified students by both the Medical Research Council and the Science Research Council are as follows:

Single student of either sex £
(a) Living in college, hostel or lodgings 695
(b) Living in the parental home 540
Married student
(c) Of either sex living in college, hostel or lodgings 695
(d) Man living in the marital home 695
(e) Man living in his or his wife's parental home 540
(f) Woman whose husband is a full-time student and
(1) who is not living in the parental home of either 695
(2) who is living in the parental home of either 540
(g) Woman whose husband is in full-time employment and
(1) who during the tenure of her award is living away from her husband and residing in the parental home of either 540
(2) who is living with her husband in the marital home or the parental home of either 445

These rates apply in the current academic year—1973–74—irrespective of the year of study, and cover both PhD and Master's degree students. Supplementary allowances may in addition be payable in respect of, for example, dependants and relevant postgraduate experience.

Postgraduate award rates for 1974–75 are at present under review.
