HC Deb 24 June 1974 vol 875 cc315-6W
26. Sir A. Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what arrangements have been made by his Department with the ECSC for compensation to employees of the British Steel Corporation who are made redundant; what is the basis of that compensation; and whether it includes any provision for the expenses of removal to, and the cost of buying, another home.

Mr. Meacher

On 5th June my right hon. Friend laid before the House regulations to bring into effect the Iron and Steel Employees Readaptation Benefits Scheme. Under this the European Commission and the United Kingdom Government will share the cost of assisting United Kingdom steelworkers who are displaced as the result of closures which qualify within the terms of Article 56 of the ECSC Treaty and who are otherwise eligible under the terms of an agreement concluded with the Commission. The scheme does include assistance towards removal and resettlement costs.
