HC Deb 24 June 1974 vol 875 cc362-3W
Mr. Clement Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if she will take steps designed to cause the producers and retailers of manufactured foodstuffs to reduce promotional costs.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

I have discussed with manufacturers the concentration of promotional price cuts on certain more essential foodstuffs, and they have agreed to do so. The list was circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT on 12th June.—[Vol. 874, c. 1624.]

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if, in the interest of consumers, she will take steps designed to cause the producers of manufactured foodstuffs to reduce unnecessary packaging.

Mr. Alan Williams

I am aware of public concern that food manufacturers may be using more packaging than is necessary to meet hygiene requirements and keep products in good condition. I am reviewing this question.
