HC Deb 20 June 1974 vol 875 cc239-40W
Sir Nigel Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will consider the wish of the Turks and Caicos Islands to form an association with Canada.

Miss Joan Lestor

Any official Canadian involvement in the future of the Turks and Caicos Islands is a matter for the Canadian Government. We should, of course, be ready to discuss with that Government any proposals they might make. However, in a statement in the Canadian House of Commons on 10th April 1974 the Canadan Secretary of State for External Affairs stated his Government's view that a proposal for formal association with Canada made by the Elected Members of the Islands' State Council in a petition to the British Government should not, in fairness to all, be pursued. A copy of the relevant Canadian Official Report is available in the Library.
