HC Deb 20 June 1974 vol 875 c255W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what is the estimated number of limited companies whose total employees exceed (a) 2,000 and (b) 200.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The information is not available. Censuses of production and distribution show that there are around 500 enterprises with 2,000 or more employees and around 4,000 enterprises with 200 or more employees engaged in manufacturing and retailing. An enterprise is defined as one or more firms under common ownership or control and commonly consists of a single company or of a holding company and its subsidiary companies.
