HC Deb 20 June 1974 vol 875 cc213-4W
29. Mr. Douglas-Mann

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in considering applications to reside in Great Britain by the husbands and fiancés of British women or of women with a right of abode here, he will distinguish between applications by those who are already married, those who are contemplating marriage and already have a genuine personal relationship, and those who are contemplating marriage but do not as yet have any such personal relationship.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I do not think that what my hon. Friend has in mind would be workable, although I have studied his suggestions with care. I hope to announce the conclusions of my review of the prob lem in the near future, but I regard the present degree of sex discrimination and potential hardship as very telling considerations.
