Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Commonwealth countries already have EEC associate status; how many others have applied; and if he will list both categories.

Mr. Hattersley

Mauritius already has associate status under the Yaoundé Convention; and Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania under the Arusha Convention.

The Commonwealth countries eligible for association under Protocol 22 of the Treaty of Accession are listed below. All are taking part in the negotiations for a new association agreement which are now in progress.
