HC Deb 20 June 1974 vol 875 c254W
Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when the vehicle allowance of severely disabled war pensioners was last increased; and by what percentage in real terms the allowance has declined in value compared to the increase in fuel costs over the same period.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The quarterly allowance payable to disabled people with cars from the Department was last increased in 1965. It has never been directly related to the cost of maintaining a car, which can vary enormously; nor is it intended as a contribution towards the cost of fuel. This is one of the aspects of the vehicle service that I am currently reviewing in the light of Lady Sharp's report.
