HL Deb 17 June 1974 vol 352 cc791-2WA
LORD HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have studied the recent initiatives by Cardiff City in providing technical instruction, land and mortgages to young married couples eager to build their own homes and of Bletchley in building one-bedroomed homes (capable of subsequent enlargement) for sale to young couples; and whether they will commend these schemes to housing authorities and technical colleges.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My right honourable and learned friend the Secretary of State for Wales welcomes the recent initiative taken by Cardiff City Council to provide self build facilities for young couples anxious to own their own homes. All housing authorities have power to provide such facilities and it is a matter for local decision as to whether or not to do so. To date, my right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment has had only a request for approval in principle from the former Bletchley U.D.C. (now part of Milton Keynes B.C.) to build small dwellings for sale, and is still awaiting fuller details from the new Milton Keynes Borough Council.

House adjourned at seven minutes before six o'clock.
